Notes - This James Slauenwhite is an enigma. The man who married Amanda Himmelman first appears in their marriage record, which names him as James W. Slauenwhite, age 21, born St. Margaret's Bay, s/o John Jacob and Sarah Slauenwhite. In the 1901 census, his DOB is given as 12 Feb 1848, and his age in the 1891 census agrees with an 1848 DOB. As to his parents, there was only one John Jacob Slaunwhite who married a woman named Sarah and lived at St. Margaret's Bay, and their children all appear in the Parish of French Village baptismal records.
In those baptismal records, there are two sons named James, one born 1844 and another born 1857. However, there is also a son named George Henry whose his DOB is given as the exact same date that appears for James in the 1901 Census! Also, four of John and Sarah's children were baptised on 19 Feb 1851, seven days before one of the four--John Frederick--was buried. So it can be hypothesized that, in all the confusion, the clergy got one or more names and dates transposed. According to the records however, the James b. 1844 was not one of the four; he was baptised 1844. But it does seem curious that his older brother, John Jacob, was one of the four baptised in 1851, not 1844!
Finally, his death certificate gives his DOB as 12 Feb 1847. But like many Nova Scotians of his vintage, he may have gotten that from the Census. What seems clear is that James, husband of Amanda, was the son of John Jacob and Sarah [Hurshman] Slauenwhite. But as to when he was born, I cannot yet untangle the facts. BeCAUSe he seems to have been baptised in 1844, I have used the 1844 DOB. [Bob H]
