- The genealogy of the Early FADER families in Victoria County, NS is a tangled mess and various genealogists have adopted various theories in attempts to untangle it. What can be said for certain is this:
a. Sometime after the 1780's Johann Matthaus FADER b. 1774 disappears; there is no record of his having married in Lunenburg County.
b. Sometime in the early 1800's a FADER family appears in the area what is now Englishtown; it is rumored that they came by way of Halifax.
c. In the 1861 Census of Victoria County, there are two Fader families, headed by William and another by William, Jr. Wm. Sr. is known to die in 1778, and Wm. Jr. is known to die in 1866.
d. In the 1871 Census of the area, there are two FADER families headed by people born bef. 1840. One appears to be Wm. FADER Sr., and the other is a John FADER, aged 101, born Scotland! (I believe this to be an erroneous POB, based on the family he was living with).
e. According to the death certificate of George FADER, s/o Wm. and Elizabeth (Tutty) FADER, his father was from Lunenburg.
If one examines the records of the FADER families of Lunenburg County, everyone born about 1774 to 1795 seems to be accounted for, except for Johann Matthaus. So, given that:
a. There is a John FADER aged 101 in the 1871 Census; and
b. The first Victoria County FADER had to come from from somewhere; and
c. There apparently is a Lunenburg connection. [Records pertaining to two known grandson's state that they were born in the US (one in NY), and since there is a Lunenburg in Germany, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the Victoria County FADER's came there directly from Germany by way of NY]
My best guess is that the John FADER in the 1871 Census was born Johann Matthaus FADER in 1774 at Lunenburg Township, NS. But I would not risk any amount higher than a nickel on it. [Bob H]
