Notes - There has long been a question as to whether James HUBLEY had one or two wives named Sarah, and it stems from the tombstone inscription for daughter Sophia Jane HUBLEY which says that it was "erected by her uncle, James Ross".
The evidence for their being only one wife named Sarah is that three independent documents--Bennett HUBLEY's obituary notice, the NS Birth Register record for Mary Rebecca HUBLEY, and the NS Marriage Register record for Reuben HUBLEY--all give their mother's name as Sarah RICHARDS or RICHARDSON (The Christian Messenger gives her name at marriage as RICHARDSON).
The explanation may lie in the fact that James HUBLEY's wife is actually named Sarah Jane and that she was b. 1833 at St. Margaret's Bay. In looking at the RICHARDSON's of SMB, there is known to be a Jane RICHARDSON b. 1833 at Indian Harbour, d/o Charles John and Catherine Elizabeth (MASON) RICHARDSON, and she has a brother named James RICHARDSON, b. 1835. I strongly suspect that James Ross is actually this brother, whose full is James Ross RICHARDSON.
So, until some contrary evidence is unearthed, Sarah Jane will be carried here as d/o Charles and Elizabeth (Mason) RICHARDSON and the question of the two wives of James HUBLEY will be (at least temporarily) put to bed. [Bob H]
