  • Notes 
    • Joseph was a shoemaker in the Nordheim-Durrenzimmern area of Wuerttemberg when he agreed to emigrate to Nova Scotia. His reason for doing so was most likely the promise of his own land. He and his family left Rotterdam, Holland, aboard the Sally, John Robinson, Master, on May 30, 1752 and arrived at Halifax, NS on Sep 6, 1752.

      In 1753, he was commander of a picket force charged with protecting the Lunenburg settlement from Indians. He was granted a tract of several hundred acres of land on the road leading to Blockhouse from Lunenburg, and established himself there as a miller. The trench which he built to bring water from nearby Dorey's Lake to his mill was visible in 1923, and may still be. Sources: Pioneers of Lunenburg, Lunenburg Progress-Enterprise, 14 Nov 1923; A.F.
