Notes - JOLLIMORE family oral history has it that this George JOLLIMORE was illegitimate, born in Jollimore to a wealthy married woman whose husband told her she could stay but not the child (who might have been born to someone named Something like GOOLEY?) could not. It is said that he child was adopted by a JOLLIMORE family from Terence Bay and he took the name JOLLIMORE.
It is known that John W. and Leah JOLLIMORE of Terence Bay have an adopted son named George Arthur JOLLIMORE living with them in 1881 and 1891. He is gone in 1901, but in 1899, a George JOLLIMORE of Terence Bay m. Catherine Elizabeth [Betsy] SLAUNWHITE and they live in Terence Bay. Later, in 1947, Betsy SLAUNWHITE's husband dies and, on his death certificate, his parents' names are given as John and Leah JOLLIMORE. His death certificate also states that he was b. 20 Sep 1879.
On the 1899 civil marriage record of Betsy SLAUNWHITE and George JOLLIMORE, his parents are given as George and Margaret (Grono) JOLLIMORE. George and Margaret do have a son, George William JOLLIMORE, who is b. at the same time as George Arthur. Also, there are two distinct baptismal records and 1881 Census entries for George William and George Arthur, so one would think that they are two different people. But in 1891, the children of George and Margaret are living with Peter and Sophia JOLLIMORE, and George Arthur is conspicuous by his absence. And, the witnesses at the 1899 marriage of George and Betsy are the s/o Peter JOLLIMORE and his wife, so all things considered, the Grono name on George's marriage record is difficult to dismiss since it fits the story of an illegitimate birth and the disappearance of George William.
All things considered, I believe that, on balance, the weight of evidence would seem to tell us that the man who marries Betsy SLAUENWHITE and dies 1947 is George Arthur JOLLIMORE, alias George William JOLLIMORE, and that they are one and the same person, the two baptisms and Census entries not withstanding.
