- Living with John and Eliza SHUBLEY in 1871 is Eliza COLP who can be identified as the daughter of William Leah Sarah (BRIGLEY) COLP. Then, in 1881, Leah Rebecca COLP is living with them and it is known that she is the daughter of William and Leah Sarah (BRIGLEY) COLP as well. It is also known that Leah Sarah died in 1878, and that daughter Blanche Violet COLP was taken in by her grandmother and renamed Leah Rebecca COLP.
Further, it is known (from the Parish of St. Margaret's Bay register) that Leah SARAH was born 24 Jun 1844 at SMB, d/o James and Eliza (DOREY) BRIGLEY, who married in 1836; and, it is known that James BRIGLEY dies in 1854. Also, the family bible of Alma BOUTILIER records the birth of her grandmother, Leah Sarah BRIGLEY, on 24 Jun 1844 at Ingramport. So it would appear that the wife of the John SHUBLEY of Port Mouton in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses must be Eliza (DOREY) BRIGLEY.
In addition, it is known that an Ann E. MORAN m. a John SHUBLEY in 1860. This might be dismissed as a clerical error; but John SHUBLEY and Ann SHUBLEY are known to have children, who in turn give the mother's name as Ann, and so it appears to be fact.
Finally, there is an Eliza DOREY, d/o James Frederick and Sophia (WESTHAVER) DOREY, whose age exactly matches that of Eliza, w/o John SHUBLEY in the 1881 Census; this Eliza is otherwise unaccounted for, and is the only DOREY I know of who meets the description of John SHUBLEY's wife.
Since there doesn't seem to be much doubt as to the identity of the John and Elza SHUBLEY in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses, the only explanation for Ann MORAN is that there seem to have been two John SHUBLEY's in this equation. [Bob H]
