- In his “History of Lunenburg County”, DesBrisay mentions a Sarah Arenburg HUBLEY who is noted for her longevity, but does not name her husband, and researchers have generally concluded that she was the wife of a John HUBLEY. And while some, such as Crowther, have placed her as the wife of John Jacob HUBLEY 1798, s/o Johannes, this is not possible as his first wife is proven to be Susanna Elizabeth WEINACHT 1801.
In the 1881 Census of Summerside [now called Dayspring], Lunenburg, there appears a Sarah HUBLEY, widow, age 85, who is living with a Charlotte ARENBURG, age 79. So, on the one hand:
a. The age of Sarah above agrees exactly with the 1796 DOB of Sarah Arenburg. Also, hat Sarah does have a sister named Charlotte.
b. Only one male HUBLEY of Sarah's vintage--Johannes 1786--is known to marry someone who bears the name Sarah.
c. Don Shankle (at least) has no marriages of a male ARENBURG to someone named Charlotte and only one marriage to a Sarah (Sarah FINCK); but that Sarah appears in the 1881 Census as a widow as well.
d. The Sarah in the 1881 Census is a Lutheran, which is what Sarah ARENBURG was baptized as.
e. The fact that said Johannes dies 1865 gibes with the widowed state of the Sarah HUBLEY in the 1881 Census.
But on the other hand:
a. The age of the Charlotte in said Census is 8 yrs off for sister Charlotte; one could argue that 1881 Census ages for people over 60 are usually way off, but that argument applies to Sarah as well.
b. What is the widow of an SMB HUBLEY doing living in the Bridgewater area?
So while it is far from certain that the Sarah Arenburg HUBLEY mentioned by DesBrisay is, in fact, the second wife of Johannes HUBLEY 1786, she will be carried here at the moment since there does not seem to be a better place to assign her. [Bob H]
