    Notes
    • It must be noted that there are three fly's in the ointment as far as John Cyrus being the husband of Lena--the John who marries Lean is Anglican, his age in the 1881 Census places his birth in 1847, and he does not appear in the family of Georeg Jacob in the 1871 Census. Although I cannot explain why he is an Anglican, the other two problems are not insurmountable. First, we know that the people's ages are sometimes off by as much as ten years in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses, and secondly, we know that the 1871 Census often leaves out children. Now of course this is rationalization, not proof. The other thing that pops into my mind are first, that we have at least three children of Alexander marrying children of George Jacob at Milford, although it also proves nothing; and second, no HUBLEY families other than those of Alexander and George Jacob seem to settle at Milford.

On the other hand, I have been through all the John HUBLEY's in my file and there is no other John HUBLEY that I can find that fits. There is always the possibility, of course, of a John that I don't yet know of. Also, I have been through a substantial portion of all the HUBLEY's in the 1881 Census, and it would appear that most HUBLEY's were either Lutheran or Baptist. I did see a one or two Presbyterian's and Anglican's, but most of those seem to have been occasioned by a male HUBLEY marrying a Presbyterian or Anglican wife. The one exception I saw was John and Lena (HUBLEY) HUBLEY of Milford. So my guess so that, while the John who marries Lena was Anglican at the time, he was born either Lutheran or Baptist.

The bottom line is that while I am not comfortable with his identity, he seems to be the only reasonable choice amongst all the John HUBLEY's I know of at the moment. [Bob H]

  • Notes
    • Although Canon Harris NOTES place John Cyrus HUBLEY 1853 in the family of Jacob and Mary (HAUGHN) HUBLEY, I think that the circumstantial evidence points directly to the family of George Jacob HUBLEY:

      a. He is know to be a Milford area HUBLEY
      b. He marries a daughter of Alexander HUBLEY so almost certainly is not a son of Alexander
      c. That appears to leave only the family of George Jacob in the Milford area
      d. The obit for Augustus HUBLEY, s/o George Jacob, states that he was one of a family of 12 children, yet only nine have been positively ID'd. So I suspect that John is one of the missing three.

So, for the moment at least, since he has to be placed somewhere, I am going to leave John Cyrus (or whoever he is) with George Jacob, Canon Harris' Notes notwithstanding. But I am not entirely comfortable with this (see his marriage notes). [Bob H]
