- There is a great deal of source information available concerning Alexander HUBLEY b. 1809 and Alexander HUBLEY, b. 1813, but it quickly becomes very confusing. I believe the confusion arises in some measure from the following items found (or in one case not found) in various transcriptions of the North West Baptist Church Register:
a. “Elexander Hubley, son to Elexander Hubley and Elizabeth his wife, was married to Mary Misoner, Daughter of Henry Misoner, and Christian, his wife, on the 26 day of April, 1832 , by Elder Maynard Parker, of Lunenburg”
b. “Children born to Elexander Hubley, 2nd, and his wife Mary. Township of Dublin.
Israel Hubley, Born Jun 19th, 1831. Recorded by Maynard Parker, Pastor
Eliza Hubley, Born February 22nd, 1833. Recorded by Maynard Parker, Pastor
Mary Ann Hubley, Born April 26th 1835. Recorded by Maynard Parker, Pastor
Ezekeel Hubley, Born April 6th, 1836. Recorded by Maynard Parker, Pastor
Nathan Hubley, Born Apr 6th, 1850. Recorded by George Hubley, Clerk.”
Many previous researchers, on seeing these entries, have concluded that Alexander 1813 marries Mary MEISNER and that Israel, Mary et al are their children. However, when one studies other sources, it becomes clear that something is wrong. To see why, a good starting point is the Death Certificate for the Israel HUBLEY above, which confirms that his mother is Mary MEISNER. Given that, we must then look at various records as well as notes on the children of the Alexander HUBLEY who lived in Milford, Annapolis County, after 1873. Specifically, the following material [provided by Lois Jenkins] is pertinent:
1.) Bridgetown Monitor of June 1909: “Mr. Israel Hubley has returned from Boston and is visiting his brother and sister, Mr. Daniel Hubley and Mrs. Obadiah Floyd.” Daniel tells us at marriage that his father is Alexander of Milford.
2.) From notes in the possession of Marjorie Rice Hubley, widow of Winifred, son of Carmen, son of Levi, Son of Jacob. Marjorie said the notes were mostly made when her father-in-law gave her family info, when she cared for him during his terminal illness. The notes say that David and Albert and “Little Dan” [i.e., Amos Daniel] were brothers to Levi; that Jacob was Levi's father; that Alex was married twice (once to Lucy) with children from both marriages; that Alex was the father of Eva, Julie, Cordelia, Dan and Zack; that Cordelia's and Eva's mother was Lucy; that Eva and Julia were sisters; that Rhuban was a brother to Eva; that Zack and “Big Dan” were brothers; that Zack and “Big Dan” were half brothers of Eva; and Eva married Levi, who was her first cousin. So Alexander of Milford has a first wife who is the mother of Zachariah, and Daniel. But from 1.) above, Daniel is the brother of Israel, who is s/o Mary MEISNER. Ergo, Mary MEISNER is the first wife of Alexander of Milford.
3.) Geraldine Sarty, granddaughter of Zachariah, said her mother Laura Belle told her that 'Zack' had 4 brothers: Ezekiel, Daniel, Samuel, and Farcee; and 4 sisters: Mary, Margaret, Etta, and Rachel. We know from the Lunenburg Baptist register that Ezekiel and Israel [who I am 99 and 44/100% certain is Farcee] are sons of Alexander and Mary, whom we have shown above is Mary MEISNER.
Which leads to the following:
a In 2.) above, we see that Eva, who is d/o Alexander and Lucy, marries her first cousin, Levi. But Levi is known from his marriage record to be s/o George Jacob and Sophia, and George Jacob is known from Lunenburg Baptist records to be s/o Ferdinand and Catherine. So Alexander, father of Eva, must also be s/o Ferdinand and Catherine, which makes him Alexander 1809.
b. Family tradition says that Cordelia and Daniel [i.e., her husband, Amos Daniel HUBLEY (aka “Little Dan”), s/o George Jacob] were first cousins”. Again, for this to be true, Alexander of Milford must be Alexander 1809.
c. Note that in 2.) above, Marjorie (Rice) HUBLEY's notes on the family of Levi and his father George Jacob include Alexander of Milford as a member of the “family”, implying a close relationship.
d. We know from their marriage record that it is Alexander, s/o Alexander and Elizabeth (i.e., Alexander 1813) who marries Caroline Catherine MEISNER on 21 Jan 1872. However, we also know that Alexander of Milford, who is now shown to be the husband of Mary MEISNER and Lucy DEMONE is alive and living with Lucy at Camperdown in 1872. So he cannot be Alexander 1813.
Therefore, it would seem that one of two things must be true. Either
a. Three different people are wrong about the relationship between George Jacob HUBLEY and Alexander HUBLEY of Milford, plus the NS Civil Marriage Register must be wrong about who marries Caroline MEISNER in 1872; or,
b. The Northwest Baptist Parish Register must have Maria MEISNER married to the wrong Alexander HUBLEY.
In an attempt to ascertain whether the entry for the marriage of Alexander HUBLEY and Maria MEISNER could be in error, Lois Jenkins visited the Baptist Archives at Acadia University, Wolfville, NS in April 2008. There she was able to examine two church record books in the North West Baptist Church collection. The first book is one from which all later transcriptions appear to have been made; its member lists and vitals pages are labeled “Copied from the original Baptist church Book”, and these pages are for both the Lunenburg and Dublin Townships. The second book in the collection is a record solely of the Baptist Church of the Township of Lunenburg, and may be the earlier book from which the records in the first book were copied, but that is not clear.
The marriage of “Elexander Hubley” and “Mary Misoner” is recorded in both books. However, in the second book, which may be the original record as noted above, the spaces for Alexander's parents' first names were left blank when the entry was made. The names “Elex” and “Elizabeth” were penciled into those spaces, presumably at a later date, suggesting that there may have been some confusion as to the name of his parents.
So while there is no definitive answer regarding the marriage entry in the North West Baptist Register, the facts available, taken together with the genealogical information and conclusions stated above, convince me that choice b. above is the correct one, and that the husband of Maria MEISNER is Alexander 1809, who also marries Lucy DEMONE and later dies at Milford.
