• Notes

  There is no known birth record (or any other record, including Canon Harris' Notes) which indicates Mary Ann's parents. She is thought to have been born about 1811, and it would appear that she most likely was the daughter of either Johann Friedrich (1769) or Johann Heinrich Matthaus SLAUENWHITE. John Henry SLAUENWHITE is noted as child #5 of JHM and Margaret (Andrews) SLAUENWHITE and if Mary an were their child, that would be too many before John Henry. So, on that basis, she is assigned to Johann Freidrich. Her death is a puzzle as well as there is no known death or burial record, nor is there a known cemetery inscription that would ID her. There is, however, an entry in the Terence Bay Deaths manuscript for a Mrs. John MARTIN who d. 07 Mar 1898. This entry appears shortly below that for Mr. John MARTIN, who d. 28 Feb 1897. While neither of these two people can be positively identified, there are very few candidates. The most likely seem to be John George and Mary Ann (Slaunwhite) SLAUNWHITE, who both appear in the 1891 Census but not in the 1901. In the copy of the Terence Bay Deaths manuscript at PANS, there is the notation “Sophia“ with her name. However, there does not seem to be a known Sophia MARTIN whom this could be. [Bob H]
