• Notes

  On 23 Jun 1893, one Selina ADAMS, d/o Henry and Lavinia, m. Arthur SAWLER, s/o James & Eliza. However, neither Arthur nor Selina can be found in the 1901 Census. On 30 Dec 1896, one Lena Alice ADAMS, d/o Henry and Lavinia, marries a man named in the record as John Alfred SAWLER, s/o James & Eliza [see his notes]. I think this is probably the Albert SAWLER who appears in the 1901 Census, as a widower, with children Effie, Austin, and Offie. In the 1901 Census Albert is shown with daughter Effie b. 1892, son Austin b.1894, and son Offie, b. 1897, and in the record of her marriage to “John Alfred” she is a widow, meaning that Effie and Norman are probably children by a previous husband. But note that their name is SAWLER. The clue to the solution of this puzzle is the fact that, in the 1881 Census, Henry and Lavinia ADAMS have a daughter Selina but no daughter named Lena or Alice. So Selina and Lena Alice are almost certainly the same person. This being the case, Arthur does not appear in the 1901 Census beCAUS ofe he dies bet. 1894-1896, leaving Selina as a widow with two small children. So in 1896, Selina marries his brother Albert and she herself then dies between 1897 -1901, after son Offie [Orpheus] is born. [Bob H]
