Notes - Hannah Jollimore is known to have had three illegitimate children--William Charles, Edward, and Mary--baptised at St. Paul's Anglican, Halifax, on 17 Oct 1852. Two of them--Mary and William--stated, in later records, that their mother was Hannah JOLLIMORE and their father was John HARTLEN. Their names sometimes appear as JOLLIMORE and other times as HARTLEN.
Johann Christian HIRTLE or HARTLEN was the father of five known sons who bore the name of John. One of them--John George--married Mary Ann SLAUENWHITE, and another--John Benjamin--married a Sophia, leaving John Valentine, John William, and John Jacob. John Jacob is known to be buried in Midville, Lunenburg County, which makes him less probable, and nothing is known of John Valentine beyond his birth. However, it is known first, that John William lived to the age of 80, and is buried near his mother in Spryfield. Second, two of the sons of Hannah JOLLIMORE by John HARTLEN bore the name William and one--James William--went by the name of William, while none of her sons bore the name Benjamin.
Although John William dies in 1887, in 1850, Hannah marries John Richard SLAUNWHITE and, in her son's 1857 marriage record, she is listed as Hannah SLAUNWHITE, all of which is consistent.
So, at the moment, the available evidence points towards John William HARTLEN as the most likely father of Hannah JOLLIMORE's illegitimate children. [Bob H]
