Notes - The SJAL Register shows two marriages of a Mary Ann HARNISH at in the mid 1830’s, without identifying the parents, which poses an identity problem.
In the first marriage ,a Mary Ann HARNISH marries a John George CULP on 17 Oct 1833, and this appears to be the daughter of Johann Caspar and Sophia (MYRER) HARNISH. First, one of the witnesses to the marriage is a James DAUPHINEE, who would be her cousin; second, she appears to have had a son named Caspar (her father’s name) in 1835; and third, there doesn’t seem to be any other Mary Ann HARNISH this could be.
In the second marriage, a Mary Ann HARNISH marries a John BERRINGER, and again, there seems to be only one Mary Ann HARNISH this could be. However, beCAUSe the wives of both John BERRINGER and George COLP can be identified in the 1871 Census, it does not seem possible that these two Mary Ann HARNISH's are the same person.
A possible clue to this puzzle is that, in later life, the Mary HARNISH who marries John COLP uses the name Ellen. Thus the most likely explanation seems to be that the woman who marries John COLP is actually Mary Eleanor, while it is her sister, Mary Ann 1835, who marries John BERRINGER. Since the ages of these two ladies in various documents vary, the fact that the age of Ellen COLP in one census exactly matches that of Mary Eleanor HARNISH is hardly conclusive. Of course, it is also possible that John COLP remarries; but on balance, the evidence--which is entirely circumstantial-- seems to point towards Mary Eleanor. For example, although she is called Mary Ann in earlier record, she is called Ellen or Eleanor in later records; also, she has a daughter named Eleanor; and finally, in the 1881 Census, she is exactly the right age to be Mary Eleanor.
