- On 05 Jan 1943, one Amos HARNISH, age 82, dies at Cole Harbour. His parents are unknown, which means he has no family around him at the time, his place of birth is given as Liverpool, which appears to be an error, and his residence is given as Sheet Harbour. Yet he is buried at Cole Harbour.
There seems to be only one person who could fit his description, and that is John Amos HARNISH b. 28 Dec 1861 at Mill Cove. The main problem with this notion, however, is that his wife is listed as a widow and is living with her family in 1901. So there seem to be two possibilities:
a. John Amos HARNISH dies before 1901 and the man who dies in 1943 is some other, unknown Amos HARNISH;
b. John Amos deserts his family before 1901 and the listing of his wife as a widow is either a Census taker's error or a reflection of his wife's state of “geographic” widowhood.
It is hardly unknown for a wife who is deserted during that time period to declare herself to be a widow, and since he is the only known (at least to me) Amos HARNISH who fits the description, John Amos is carried here as having died in 1943 pending discovery of further evidence. [Bob H]
