Notes - Little is known of this John HARTLEN, including his parents. It is known that he was most likely C of E, that he at least resided in Terence Bay, and that he married, in 1855 at St. Paul's, Halifax, a woman named Elizabeth SLAUNWITE. However, little is known of the origins of this Elizabeth SLAUNWITE.
From the known facts, the best guess at the identity of Elizabeth is that she is the sister of Caroline Margaret SLAUNWHITE, who marries James William HARTLEN. He, in turn, is the illegitimate son of Hannah JOLLIMORE by John HARTLEN. From the fact that James William is the only HARTLEN seen in Terence Bay in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, it seems reasonable that John is related to him. So, if it is assumed that Jane Elizabeth SLAUNWHITE is the woman this John marries (see notes for her), then my best guess is that John is the older brother of James William. [Bob H]
