Notes - There are two topics that must be addressed in these notes.. First, a question is sometimes raised as to who are the parents of the children shown here as belonging to James William 1815 and Sarah (EISENHAUER) 1811 LANTZ, the alternate candidates being Sarah Ann LANTZ b. 5 Apr 1827 and husband James William ERNST, b. 1 Nov 1825. The proof that they belong to the former couple is this.
In the 1871 Census, the couple who appear to be James 1825 and Sarah 1827 are childless, while the above-mentioned children are living with the couple who appear to be James 1815 and Sarah 1811. In 1881, the mother of those children is widow, while the younger couple are both living. Now the will of a James ERNST, h/o Sarah, and father those seven children (who are all listed in the will) makes his will on 17 Jun 1875, and it is probated 6 Jul 1875. His civil death record says that he died two days before the will was drawn, which is amusing, but more importantly, it states that he was age 58.
Also, the James William ERNST who dies 1895--whom we know from their side-by-side markers at Bayview Cemetery is the h/o Sarah Ann 1827--also leaves a will. In that will, he has no children and his executor is Albert LANTZ.
The second topic is--who are the parents of James William ERNST. He is shown here as belonging to William and Hannah (LANGILLE) ERNST for two reasons. First, for my purposes, he must be placed somewhere; and second, the following [albeit flimsy] evidence suggests that he might be their son.
One William ERNST leaves a will dated 31 Oct 1875 and it appears to be that of Hannah Langille's husband beCAUSe, of the four children of William and Hannah who have baptismal records, three are listed as heirs in said will. It also lists a son named James and in 1871, James 1815 is living next door to a John ERNST who is of the right vintage to be his brother. Also, William and Hannah (LANGILLE) ERNST are married 02 May 1815 and there are no known recorded births for them before 1828, suggesting there were more children beforehand, of whom James William could be the first.
