- There seems to be general agreement that Michael BRUHM (1804 - 19 May 1884) m. Anna Barbara EISENHAUER (2 Nov 1806 - 4 Oct 1865) and that they have a daughter Elizabeth (BRUHM) 1834, w/o James LOWE. The conundrum is--do Michael and Anna Barbara have additional children?
The Shankle transcripts have the following for children of a Michael BRUHM:
"BRUHM","Eliz","B","1834-05-14","1834-07-21","DRL","Michael& Barbara",,
"BRUHM","Josiah","B","1835-11-24","1836-03-20","ZLL","Michael& Barbara Franck",,"Phil Berghaus & Cath"
"BRUHM","Esther Sophia","B","1844-11-26","1845-05-02","MBA","Michael& Barbara",,"Edward & Eliz Ernst"
"BRUHM","Edmund","B","1840-03-03","1840-04-18","ZLL","Michael& Barbara Franck",,"Matt Naas & wife"
while the Stevens transcripts have this:
Bruhm Eliza 1834-05-14 1834-07-21 DRL Michael & Barbara Eisenhauer
Bruhm Josiah 1835-11-24 1836-03-20 ZLL Michael & Barbara Frank
Bruhm Esther Sophia 1844-11-26 1845-05-02 MBA Michael & Barbara
Bruhm Edmund 1840-03-03 1840-04-18 ZLL Michael & Barbara Frank
A number of genealogies have interpreted the above to mean that there were two couples-- Michael and Barbara (EISENHAUER) BRUHM with a single child--Eliza, and Michael and Barbara (FRANK) BRUHM with the children Josiah, Esther and Edmund. But the following facts appear to contradict this:
a. In the 1838 Census, there is only one Michael BRUHM in Lunenburg County and his household includes two children between ages 0-6, one male and one female. This is would appear to be Elizabeth 1834 and Josiah 1835, and would seem to indicate that he is the parent of both.
b. Michael BRUHM cannot marry both Barbara EISENHAUER and Barbara FRANK in rapid succession beCAUSe he is still married to Barbara EISENHAUER when she dies in 1865.
c. The cemetery inscription for Barbara (EISENHAUER) BRUHM contains the words "Our Mother", implying more that she had more than one child.
d. The sponsors at the baptism of Josiah BRUHM 1835 above, whom both sets of transcripts have as the d/o Barbara FRANCK, are Philip and Catherine BARKHOUSE, who are the brother-in law and sister of Barbara (EISENHAUER) BRUHM.
e. There is no record (at least that I can find), of a Barbara FRANK who could have married a Michael BRUHM of this vintage.
f. In the 1871 Census, Michael BRUHM is living in the same house as "Edwin" BRUHM; and in the 1881 Census, Michael has moved in with daughter Esther above, who lives next door to "Edmund".
g. Daughter Esther Sophia's death record names her mother "Mary Eisnor", and she is the youngest child.
So, my conclusion is that:
a. Either both records are wrong regarding Barbara "FRANK"; or both transcribers misread the church registers; or Anna Barbara EISENHAUER was the widow of an unknown FRANK when she marries Michael BRUHM.
b. Anna Barbara EISENHAUER is the mother of Edmund, Esther and Joshua, as well as Eliza.
