  • Notes
    • On 15 May 1876, a William MOSSMAN, Mariner, s/o Jacob and Sarah, m. Eliz Ann MOSSMAN, d/o Edward and Charlotte. The question is--who are his parents? At first blush, they would appear to be Jacob and Sarah Ann (MOSER) MOSSMAN, since no other Jacob and Sarah MOSSMAN couple of that vintage are known.

Now when William marries on 15 Jan 1876, he gives his age as 28, which would place his birth in 1847. However, there is no room in the the family's birth order; also, the baptisms of all of Jacob's [known] children born between 1846 and 1851 are recorded in the St. Andrew's Parish Register and William is not amongst them. It would appear hat he cannot be theWIlliam or the same age who is s/o Edward and Charlotte SCHAUFENNBURG, beCAUSe he would be marrying his sister.

What solves this riddle is the following inscription at Seaside Cemetery, Kingsburg:

"Mossman Mrs Elizabeth Ann Upper Kingsburg 1851 - Mar 1946Rose Bay 95 Yrs Wife Of William E. Mossman Died At A Great Age - 95 YearsDaughter Of Jacob & Sarah (Mosher) Mossman Always Known As Aunt Betty Or Betsy One Son William H. Mossman Her Grandmother - Charlotte Shaffenburg Of Irish Descent"
