Family Mary Ann HUBLEY, b. 26 Apr 1835, Laconia [Lakeview], Lunenburg, NS d. 16 Sep 1909, Nictaux, Annapolis, NS (Age 74 years) Marriage 27 May 1858 Bridgewater, Lunenburg, NS [6] Notes - There are two theories as to whom the Mary Ann HUBLEY b. 1835 married. The case for her as the wife of George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE rests on the following evidence:
a. She is born in New Dublin Township and, after marriage, a Census places the family in the Dublin portion of that township.
b. George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE was born and lived in an area near where this Mary Ann HUBLEY was born and lived.
c. On 27 May 1858, a Mary Ann HUBLEY marries George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE at Bridgewater, which was originally a part of the New Dublin Township.
d. The ages given for George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE's wife in the various censuses, together with her child-bearing years (1857-1879), all fit an 1835 birth.
e. The case for her as the wife of Joseph SEILER, who married a Mary Ann HUBLEY(age unknown) at St. Stephen's Anglican, Chester, in 1853--seems to be based solely on the fact that were she born in 1835, that would make her 18 in 1853, a good age for a first marriage. But it would seem likely that the Mary Ann HUBLEY who marries in Chester would be from the Chester or St. Margaret's Bay area. It would also seem that she is of the wrong religion, as the Mary Ann HUBLEY of Dublin would most likely have been married at Chester Baptist, were she married at Chester.
f. As George Elkanah and Mary (HUBLEY) SLAUENWHITE grew older, their oldest son, George, took over the family farm, which was just barely able to sustain the family. At that point, all of the children of George and Mary move to the Annapolis Valley. I believe the reason they did so is that this is where all of their HUBLEY aunts, uncles, and cousins are know to have moved to a bit earlier. After her husband's death, their mother joins them there.
g. The age at death in her death register entry is 74 yrs, which exaclty matches an 1835 birth.
So while there is no smoking gun to prove that the Mary HUBLEY who marries George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE is the daughter of Alexander HUBLEY 1809, I believe that the circumstantial evidence leaves almost no room for doubt. [Bob H]

- There are two theories as to whom the Mary Ann HUBLEY b. 1835 married. The case for her as the wife of George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE rests on the following evidence:
-
Notes - His birth record states only that he is the s/o George and Hannah.
Canon Harris says that he was the son of John George and Hannah Regina (Ernst) SLAUENWHITE; if so, he would certainly fit into their birth order. But I can find no other reference to Regina Ernst as being named “Hannah” and it is known that she went by the name of Rachel. Also, everyone else in their family seems to have been born in, and not strayed far from, the Mahone Bay area, whereas George Elkanah appears only in the Middlewood area.
On the other hand, in the area around Middlewood there lived the family of John George and Johanna Elizabeth (Moser) SLAUENWHITE, into whose birth order George Elkanah would also nicely fit. Further, it is known that this Johanna Elizabeth went by the name of Hannah. Finally, whereas George Elkanah occupies house #144 in 1881 Census [Petite Riviere District], house #145 is occupied by Franz (Francis) SLAUENWHITE, who is the brother of the John George who m. Hannah MOSER.
So I believe that, in the case of George Elkanah, Canon Harris got his George and Hannah's crossed.
Various unincorporated areas in Lunenburg that are now collectively called Middlewood were previously referred to as Bull's Run, Middletown, New Post Road, and/or Slauenwhite's Cross. The name “Middlewood” itself seems to have been specific to the location of the first house in the area, built by Franz Slauenwhite. The name “Slauenwhite's Cross may refer to George Elkanah SLAUENWHITE, whose house was located at the junction of the Post Road and the road up from Vogler's Cove. [Bob H]
