• Notes

  The question sometimes arises as to whether is it John James DAUPHINEE 1805, s/o James Christopher and Susannah Catherine (JOLLYMORE) DAUPHINEE or John James 1815, s/o James and Susannah Elizabeth (BURGOYNE) DAUPHINEE who m. Catherine CORKUM. The proof that it is the latter is as follows. First, Oscar DAUPHINEE b. 25 Dec 1862  is s/o of John James and Catherine (CORKUM) DAUPHINEE, and In the 1901 Census, residing in Oscar's household is James M. DAUPHINEE, Father, b. 5 Jun 1815, which exacatly matches the h/o Susan Elizabeth BURGOYNE Second, we know James DAUPHINEE 1788 married Susannah Elizabeth BURGOYNE, but the birth record for James 1805 states that his mother is named Susan Catherine. Third, thanks to research by Brenda Maruca, we know from various land records that: a. James and Susannah (BURGOYNE) DAUPHINEE lived at Marriott's cove, where we know James 1815 was born; and b. On 5 April 1858, James and Catherine sold land at Chester to his brother Joseph and on the same day he and Catherine deeded land to his brother John. (Lunenburg County Deeds, v. 16, #'s 494 & 495, fhl MFM #  0550919). Both deeds referred to land owned and occupied by the late James DAUPHINEE, Sr. of Chester, and their age(s) on their cemetery marker(s) positively identify the couple buried at Chester as James and Susannah (BURGOYNE) DAUPHINEE. On the other hand, we know that James and Suannah (JOLLIMORE) DAUPHINEE removed to Cape Breton. So there should be no doubt that it is James 1815 who m. Catherine CORKUM.
