Since his DOB in the St. Luke's, Hubbards, parish register is 12 Dec 1871, what apparently happened is that his 1871 birth was reported in Jan 1872 or thereabouts, and when the recording clerk later transcribed the reporting sheets into the register book, he simply got careless and entered the wrong year.
