- The OLMC Register records that, on 28 Jun 1914, Bernard Robie SLAUNWHITE, b. 16 May 1914, s/o Rufus and Hattie (Slaunwhite) SLAUNWHITE was baptised; also, someone later wrote in “Bernard” in front of father Rufus' name.
Then two pages later, page 102 records that, on 13 Sep 1915, Robert Ernest SLAUNWHITE, s/o (--?--) and Hattie SLAUNWHITE was baptised. Here, The name Ernest SLAUNWHITE is later written in for the father, the date of birth “16 May 1915?” is recorded, and the name Robert Ernest is overwritten by the name, Bernard Robie SLAUNWHITE! And finally, when this person marries he gives his name a Bernard Joseph SLAUNWHITE and his father as Rufus SLAUNWHITE.
There is only one known Bernard Robie SLAUNWHITE, whose obit states that he is the son of Ernest and Hattie (Slaunwhite) SLAUNWHITE. Further, there is no trace of anyone named Robert Ernest SLAUNWHITE.
So it would appear that the child born to Hattie SLAUNWHITE in May 1914, seven years before her marriage to James Ernest SLAUNWHITE, was her illegitimate son by a Rufus SLAUNWHITE. The Rufus SLAUNWHITE in question can be narrowed down to one of two people--either Arthur Rufus SLAUNWHITE or Ephraim Rufus SLAUNWHITE, both of whom went by the name Rufus, and both of whom were single in 1914.
Ephraim Rufus is shown here as the father based on the following admittedly flimsy circumstantial evidence. In his marriage record, Bernard SLAUNWHITE states that his father was born at Terence Bay and from the OLMC register, it is known that Arthur was born at Lower Prospect, while Ephraim was born at Terence Bay.
