    Notes
    • According to the OLMC parish register, the marriage was re-validated on 12 Jun 1903 at OLMC. This means that James probably converted about this time since Isabella was already RC. [Bob H]

  • Notes
    • What is known for certain is that a William James SLAUNWHITE married a Margaret Mary Slaunwhite in 1943. The Parish Register of Brunswick UCC gives his age as 44, his parents as James SLAUNWHITE and Isabel MARTIN, and his place of birth as Terence Bay.

However, in the 1901 Census of Terence Bay there are two sons listed--John (baptised as John William) and Wilfred (who gives his name as Wilfred Michael on his C.E.F. enlistment papers). John and Wilfred are b. 1897 and 1898, respectively, while (if the Brunswick Parish Register date is taken at face value) William James is b. 1898 or 1899.

Although William James could be an otherwise unknown son born after 1901, Nova Scotians are famous for interchanging the order of given names, and John is often seen for James and vice versa. Finally, when Nova Scotians lie about there age at marriage (which they often do), they usually make themselves younger, not older. So, it seems most likely that William James and John William are the same person. [Bob H]
