  • Notes
    • Robert Alger SLAUNWHITE is an enigma. He is b. 22 Jan 1875, bp. 6 Apr 1985, s/o Dennis SLAUNWHITE and Mary HARTLING. [OLMC, 1875, P.53, #13]. The problem is, there is no known marriage of any Dennis SLAUNWHITE to a Mary HARTLEN (by whatever spelling) and there is no hint that he is illegitimate. Further, all the Dennis SLAUNWHITE's are accounted for, and the only known Mary HARTLEN who could be his mother is the wife of Francis SLAUNWHITE. So I tend to think that he is the son of Frances (vice Dennis) and Mary, and this is just another of those hiccups in the OLMC Parish Register.

There are (at least) two theories as to why he doesn't show up in the Census. Theory #1 is that he dies before the 1881. Theory #2 starts with the fact that the only known Robert SLAUNWHITE, age 26, who could have been buried in St. Paul's Cemetery in Dec 1901 is Robert Alger. This does not explain why someone born RC is buried in an Anglican cemetery, nor why he does not show up in the census for 1881 and 1891. But as we know, none of these would be all that isolated or mysterious an event, so I tend be be of the latter school of thought. But just barely. [Bob H]
