- It is known (from a St. Margaret's Bay deed cited by Iris Shea) that Johann Martin SLAUENWHITE and his wife had 4 children before 1814. The fourth child could be one of at least two people--Margaret SLAUENWHITE or William Slauenwhite. As is discussed in the notes for Margaret SLAUENWHITE, I believe it is more likely that she is the child of Johann Heinrich Matthaus and Margaret (Andrews) SLAUENWHITE.
William is shown in the 1827 Census of Lower Prospect along with John Frederick and John Martin SLAUENWHITE, but he is not in the 1838 which would imply that he dies before then. It would seem that he is a young man as he has a small daughter, no wife, and one other male over 16 living with him, plus there has recently been a death in the family. The simplest explanation I can think of that fits all these pieces together is this:
a. He is a son of one of the other two SLAUENWHITE heads of household,
b. His wife may have recently died in childbirth,
c. The other male living with him is either his younger brother or someone who helps to work his boat since the Census tells us he is a fisherman.
Regardless of what happened to his wife and who the other person is, that fact still remains that he looks like the son of either John Frederick or John Martin. Now, on 29 May 1859, a William SLAWNWHITE is conditionally baptised at OLMC in the presence of John Martin and Mrs. Martin SLAWNWHITE, whose children one by one, are becoming RC. If I have him identified correctly, the only other child of John Martin who bears the name of Martin remains an Anglican. So I believe William is most likely the son of John Martin.
If all of the above is true (a big if), then my guess is that he was born abt. 1809 (where abt. means plus or minus five years) since he is shown as an independent adult in 1827 and the other male living with him might possibly be John George. [Bob H]
