Notes |
- The McCormick/Darres papers show the follwing in the family of Alfred and Susannah:
vi. Martha DARRES, (twin); d. young after eating wild carrot;
vii. Annie DARRES, (twin); d. young after eating wild carrot;
It has been suggested that Martha and Annie are, in reality, Lucy and Rosanna. However, I believe that the evidenc points to a differtn conclusion.
First off, in both of the known records for Rosanna Elizabeth, she appears
as Rosanna. If she had a nickname, while Annie" is within the realm of
possibility, one would have expected something like "Lizzie" or "Rosie". But
more interesting is that her death record states that she died of
"Teething", not "Poisoning".
Now note that the McCormick/Darres papers lists Martha and Annie as children vi. and vii. This only works if Lucy is a clerical error, and the twins are born bet. 1877 and 1881, which would also explain why they appear neither in the civil register or the census.
So I believe they are separate and distinct children of Alfred and Susannah.
PS. Wild carrot is more commonly known (at least in the US) as Queen Anne's Lace.
