  • Notes
    • On 12 Nov 1892, one Charles E. HUBLEY marries Addie SEWALL at Orono, Penobscot, ME. They settle down and subsequently appear in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, as well as a number of city directories. So he cannot be the Charles who marries Ethel Jane SMITH. But he would seem to be one of three people:

      a. Charles Fraser HUBLEY, b. 10 Mar 1868 at New Cumberland, Lunenburg, NS
      b. Charles Edwin HUBLEY, b. 20 Feb 1874 at St. Margaret's Bay
      c. Charles HUBLEY, b 1877 in Lunenburg County.

I had thought that he was probably Charles Edwin HUBLEY mainly beCAUS ofe the “E.” in Charles E. HUBLEY of ME is both consistent and distinct. But Charles E. HUBLEY of ME also consistently maintains that he was born 1869, which more closely matches Charles Fraser HUBLEY.

Most Nova Scotians of that period seem to have been somewhat confused about which was their true “given” name--their first or middle name--so it's quite common to see the baptismal names reversed in adulthood. Thus Charles Edwin HUBLEY could easily be Edward Charles HUBLEY.

Next, the man who m. Ethel Jane SMITH states on his CEF Attestation papers that he is born Halifax, NS and we know it was quite common for someone giving their NS address (in some other province or US state) to say Halifax, when they were actually born in the vicinity of Halifax; and someone born at St. Margaret's Bay is certainly more apt to say “Halifax“ than someone born in the hinterlands of Lunenburg County. So that seems to undermine the case for suspect c..

We also know that although Edward Charles varies his year of birth, i.e., we see 1874, 1876 and 1877, he is highly consistent in the day and month; i.e., the month is always February, and the day is either the 21st or 22nd. Now notice that Charles Edwin HUBLEY is born 20 Feb 1874 at SMB!

And finally, we know that Charles Edwin HUBLEY is illegitimate. I cannot think of a better scenario to explain why he shows up in Quebec a few years later to enlist in the Army for the Boer War, and never returns to NS.

So, I think Ethel Jane SMITH's husband is Edwin Charles HUBLEY, b. 20 Feb 1874, s/o Annie HUBLEY (1850-1874) [Bob H]
