- In his 1911 marriage record, Thomas Alexander HUBLEY states that he is age 31, and was born at Tangier, the s/o Thomas and Elizabeth. He further states that his father's occupation is (or was) Sea Captain and give his religion as CofE. In the 1901 Census, his DOB and his religion match those in his marriage record.
The problem is--there was no couple named Thomas and Elizabeth HUBLEY that we know of in the 1800's, let alone one that lived at Tangier.
Who did live at Tangier at the time of Thomas Alexander's birth was the family of Alexander HUBLEY 1832, himself a Sea Captain. However, he and his wife Eleanor are almost certainly not the parents since their names are wrong, they are too old, they are the wrong religion, and there is nobody resembling Thomas Alexander in their household in 1881.
Alexander 1832 does have a son named Thomas but he is miner who is a bachelor when Alexander marries Bridget COSTLY in 1883. And since Thomas is a miner not a sea captain, he would not appear to be Thomas Alexander's father, nor can he be Thomas Alexander himself.
Alexander 1832 also has a son named Alexander, but he is single and living with his parents in 1881, when he dies at sea. So he would not appear to be Thomas Alexander, nor would he appear to be his father.
in 1881, Eleanor (ABRIEL) HUBLEY does not appear in the census, and Bridget COSTLY, whom Alexander later marries, is living in the household, probably as the housekeeper. So, a possible explanation which seems to fit the known facts is that Thomas Alexander is the illegitimate s/o Alexander 1832 by a woman named Elizabeth who is CofE. This is conjecture but since, for my purposes, Thomas Alexander must be placed somewhere [lest he be lost], he is placed here as the s/o Alexander and an otherwise unknown Elizabeth (--?--). [Bob H]
