• Notes

  Family legend has it that he was not actually born in Newfoundland. Rather, when he was two years old, the ship carrying him ran aground off of Newfoundland and he was taken in by a well-to-do family in the area. At age 18 he went in search of his birth family in St. Margaret's Bay. He appears in the 1881 Census, but his wife is a widow when she dies in 1889.
