- There is no hard evidence to prove that the John Cosgrove who, in 1886, fathers Laura Esther Cosgrove by Nettie JOLLIMORE is the same John COSGROVE who marries Mary Elizabeth JOLLIMORE in MA. But the circumstantial evidence seems to lead to that conclusion.
First, from the baptismal record, although it is not explicitly stated, it would appear that Laura Esther is illegitimate. At any rate, Laura Esther's mother soon marries Alexander GILKIE and it is highly improbable that she divorces to do this. So John COSGROVE either dies or leaves the scene. From the 1920 Census and his Naturalization record, it is known that a John COSGROVE born NS enters the US in 1889, and this is consistent with the behaviour of a man involved in a Victorian era scandal.
Next, in 1890, a John COSGROVE marries Mary Elizabeth Jollimore in MA. This is fast work if he enters the US in 1889 and in April 1890 marries a woman previously unknown to him. In their marriage record, she is given as the d/o George and Mary JOLMORE, he is given as the s/o John and Mary COSGROVE, and they both give their place of birth as NS.
Mary Elizabeth JOLLIMORE appears to be the d/o George Edward and Margaret (Grono) JOLLIMORE as her known year of birth matches exactly and there are no other known Mary Elizabeth JOLLIMORE's this could be. Plus, she is Nettie's second cousin and, prior to emigration, lives in the area (Prospect) as Nettie. She appears to have entered the US on 20 Aug 1888, arriving in Boston aboard the Steamship CARROLL.
John Cosgrove states on his application for US Citizenship that he was born NS on 21 Mar 1863. Now in the 1881 Census of NS, there is only one COSGROVE family. It is located in Halifax and fits his parents' names in the marriage record for John COSGROVE and Mary Elizabeth JOLLIMORE, as well as their probable ages and nationalities.
Given all that, the notion there are two John COSGROVE's of about the same age, in roughly the same location, the former who has a child by Nettie JOLLIMORE and then disappears, and the latter who turns up and marries her cousin shortly after the former disappears, is just too big a coincidence for me to accept, at least at the moment.
