• Notes

  The various Census from 1871 to 1901 give his age as 29, 42, 50, and 62 respectively, which would place his birth somewhere between 1838/39 and 1842. It is known that his brother was baptised in April 1839 at age 8 months, so it appears unlikely he was born in Jun 1838. There is simply no way to accurately tell when he was born. Averaging the various ages together points to a DOB abt 1839. Now, a frequently occurring phenomenon in the 1901 Census is that the day and month of birth are correct, while the year of birth is off by one year. Therefore, since the indications above are that he was born after 1838, it seems most likely that he was born 13 Jun 1939, one year after the DOB shown in the 1901 Census. [Bob H]
